Garmin Forerunner 310xt Freezing Problem

As you all know for Christmas a got what I had been wanting the Garmin Forerunner 310xt. I was very excited that I got it and really appreciated that my family members had pooled their money on order to be able to get me this very expensive watch. I have now gone on about 10 runs with it and love it but twice I have had a problem.

Last week I was on a 35 minute run and sometime into the run I happened to notice that the Forerunner said I had been running for 9 minutes. Now this is a frequent route and I knew right away that I had been running for longer than that. I looked closely and noticed it had just stopped recording. I tried pressing the mode button, the up and down button to change the display screen the stop butons and nothing it was just stuck on the first screen the one that gives you the time, miles, and pace. When I got home I was able to turn it off and then back on but the information had been lost.

Now I figured I had just done something weird and crossed my fingers that the expensive watch was fine and it was my fault. For the next few runs it worked fine which definitely made me feel like I must have done something until yesterday. I happened again yesterday with 2 minutes left in my run. Very frustrating, somehow I managed to be able to save the run info on the watch but it is unable to read it to transfer it to the computer.

Again I love my Forerunner 310xt overall I have had good experiences with it and I am glad there is this new tool for triathlon but what is going on with the freezing? Has this happened to anyone else? This cannot be right and if Garmin knows this problem exists they should be telling the consumer about it.

  1. Yes, this happened to me too. Yesterday and today I got another problem as well. When I try to reset it (by pressing lap/reset) it counts down to 1 and then it freezes. Very annoying since I cannot transfer the data, and the only solution was to delete all data.

  2. I emailed garmin about a week ago and still no response, very very bad service especially for a product that is so expensive. I guess I will have to email them again to see if they can help me and if this is a common problem with the garmin forerunner 310xt.

  3. Same thing happened to me, for the first time, yesterday during a triathlon. It froze as I came out the water. Very frustrating!! I'm hoping there's a firmware update that solves the issue - otherwise it's going back and I'll get a Polar.

  4. Same thing happened to me. Stuck on 1. Seems to happen when I don't delete data for a long period of time. Now I can't even hard reset it. Stuck...

  5. Wow, just had the same thing happen as Rob above. In a triathlon, coming out of the water and bam, stuck as hell. Really pissed me off during the bike and run. Just when you really need a watch, it fails. I can't reset, hard reset or anything.

  6. I plugged it in and then turned it off and back on and it started up again. Then I did what Garmin told me to and downloaded the new software and have not had a problem since I first posted this and did what garmin said. Too bad about it hapening during your tri as that is what it is for.

  8. I'm looking into buying a GPS watch. Looking at this and the Timex T5F011 with the data recorder. Which do you recommend?

  9. Hello,
I am really really happy with the Garmin Forerunner 310xt it is great and really easy to download info to garmin connect. The garmin 305 just went on sale on amazon for about $150 free shipping, good deal!

  10. I have had a 310XT for a few months now and have had no problems until today. The screen just froze and none of the buttons would do anything. sometimes it would start but would not track speed, time etc.It seems to be doing all sorts of weird things except working as it should do.
Apart from that a very good watch.

  11. When it works, it an awesome tool. But frequently it does not. Problems: it will record a workout but not properly download it; it's on the watch but I can't figure out a way to view it or copy it to the trainer. Other problems. Screen is sometimes blank. Still useable and records information but you can't see it during a workout; you can download the log and see your workout. Or, the screen is garbled. It may start out fine and then disappear. Annoying as hell.

For the price my only requirement is that it works. All the time!

  12. Same thing happened to my Garmin this weekend just before the start of a Tri. I just did a hard reset (hold down Mode, then press Power). You will need to re enter all your data. Seems to have worked...no more freezing up.

  13. I too received the 310xt as a Christmas gift and I had no issues until the first time I took it into the water for an exteded period of time during a tri. When I turned it off after the race it would not turn back on. None of the hard resets worked. I called Garmin and they had me send it back as it was covered under warranty. I received a watch back in about 10 days. I don't know if it was new or just my watch fixed. I used this new watch again during training for another race which was this weekend 6/11/11. Once again this was the first time the watch was in the water for extended period of time. Worked fine until I turned it off and then tried to turn it on again. Dead. I will be calling them again ASAP. Not a happy customer.

  14. I have had problems with my 310 (forerunner) also.
Problem 1) Their ANT client would not read my watch.
Problem 2) The data from a subsequent workout was allegedly downloaded. Yet, could not locate same.
Problem 3) After uploading latest software update, could not locate bicycle mode. The default setting was for running, not cycling.
Problem 4) Personal: Since Garmin is insisting on gathering your user data and aggregating it into the "cloud". They added another layer of complexity to the troubleshooting process. Is it the watch? Is it their website? Is it the PC? Why did they not just implement a PC based software solution.
I am finding it to be a "hit-or-miss" proposition to enjoy a simple use experience: I activate the 310; I execute my exercise routine; My watch communicates with ANT the data is transferred and a report is issued. The above scenario has happened only once. The rest of the time I have had to troubleshoot and troubleshoot.

  15. I have had my Forerunner 310XT since December 2009 and have had the blank screen and/or garbled screen issues for awhile (amongst others - stops recording for no reason during a training run, won't acquire satellite signal, etc).

I have done hard resets and updated the software which does not fix the intermittent screen issue (other issues mentioned above seem to be resolved with the various software updates).

Little did I realize (my fault) that warranty was only 12 months and I should have reported this prior to it expiring. Just called into support and was offered a replacement for $99 (guessing it would be refurbished model but did not clarify yet).

For what you pay for this watch, one would expect a longer warranty period and for it not to experience these types of problems so soon. Very frustrating.

  16. I just purchased the Garmin 310xt a few days ago because it was on sale and figured it was steal.

however, it just started freezing up. I've had it for a week. I read that it had software issues but figured at this point the kinks would have been worked out.

I guess not. I'll be reading through the comments here to see what I need to do to fix this problem.

  18. Had the same problem with mine (stuck on the Garmin Screen). Here's how I fixed: Attach USB to computer and attach to device, Once it starts charging, disconnect from device, mine then went to the 00:00:00 screen and would only show past runs in History (I went through the last run - a 60K - and wrote everything down), then noticed that somehow the "Pairing" was turned off, so I turned that back on and DL'd the info to my computer, my memory was at 60% so I went ahead and deleted all the old stuff. Personally, I was not willing to do a hard reset until I got everything DL'd to Garmin and Strava. I had just run a 60K and there was no way I was losing that data!
